REGISTRATION IN COSTA RICA OF DEATHS OCCURRED ABROAD

Requirements:

  1. Request letter in Spanish indicating an email or phone number for notifications. The letter will be signed in front of the Consul on the day of the appointment.
  2. Original and copy of the death certificate, duly apostilled.
  3. Copy of both sides of the valid Costa Rican identification card (cédula de identidad) or of the personal information page of the applicant´s pasport.
  4. German postal stamps. Please consult the consulate about the exact amount of stamps required.

Procedure:

If the documents are complete and correct, an appointment at the Embassy or Honorary Consulate will be assigned in order to sign the request letter in front of the Consul. Please note that the original passport or Costa Rican identification card must be brought to the appointment.

Time for registration in Costa Rica:

  • Sent by certified mail: 2 months.
  • To speed up the process, you can hire a courier service.

Cost: Free of charge

Legal Basis:

- Organic law 3504 of the Electoral Supreme Court (Tribunal Supremo de Elecciones) and Article 59 of the Civil Registry (Registro Civil).
