Who can apply for this type of residency?

  1. Individuals whose father, mother, daughters or sons are Costa Rican citizens.
  2. Individuals who have held a temporary residence for three consecutive years.

Application Requirements:

  1. Application form. Please use capital letters to fill out the form. It is not necessary to include the picture just yet.
  2. Application letter that indicates the following personal information:
    1. reason for the application
    2. full name
    3. nationality
    4. marital status
    5. age
    6. occupation
    7. current residence address
    8. contact information for notifications (fax number in Costa Rica is recommended)
    9. the letter will be signed in front of the consul on the day of the appointment
  3. 3 recent passport-size photos.
  4. Original and copy of a certificate issued within the last 2 months by the Civil Registry of Costa Rica that demonstrates the relationship with the person in Costa Rica.
  5. Original and copy of the following documents with less than 6 months of issuance and duly apostilled:
    1. International birth certificate.
    2. Criminal record from the place where the applicant has resided during the last 3 years.
  6. Copies of all pages of the applicant's passport. The passport must have a minimum validity of 6 months.

Starting the process at the Embassy or Honorary Consulate:

If the documents are complete and correct, an appointment at the Embassy or Honorary Consulate will be scheduled in order to stamp the visa in the passport. Please do not forget to bring the following documents to the appointment:

  1. Original, valid passport.
  2. Enough money in cash to cover the cost of mailing the documents to Costa Rica by Courier.

Time for appointment: 10 business days (if all documentation is correctly submitted).

Residence process in Costa Rica


  • - Authentication of the signature in the application letter: See Tariff 9.
  • - Any additional costs requested by the Immigration Department to finish the residency application procedure.
