REGISTRATION OF A COSTA RICAN CHILD BORN ABROAD

Requirements:

  1. Cover letter indicating the Costa Rican parent's email or phone number for notifications.
  2. Filled form (this form is only a draft)
  3. Original and copy of the international German birth certificate, duly apostilled. If you were not born in Germany, a birth certificate from the respective country, duly apostilled. If the certificate is not in Spanish, an official translation into Spanish with Apostille must be provided.
  4. Copy of both sides of the valid identification card (cédula de identidad) of the Costa Rican parent.
  5. Copy of the personal information page of the foreign parent's valid passport. This is not necessary if only the Costa Rican parent is registering the birth.
  6. German Postal Stamps worth 7,20€ for shipment to Costa Rica.

Procedure:

If the documents are complete and correct, an appointment at the Embassy or Honorary Consulate will be given to fill out the original birth certificate form. The Costa Rican parent must bring the original and valid Costa Rican identification card (cédula de identidad) to the appointment.

Time for registration in Costa Rica:

  • If sent by certified mail: 2 months.
  • To speed up the process, you can hire a courier service.

Cost: Free of charge

Legal Basis:

- Constitution of Costa Rican, Article 13.

- Organic Law 3504 of the Electoral Supreme Court of Costa Rica (Tribunal Supremo de Elecciones) and Article 48 of the Civil Registry (Registro Civil).
